Affirmed Networks Acquisition

Microsoft announced that they will acquire Affirmed Networks to deliver new opportunities for businesses developing a global 5G ecosystem. The fifth generation of wireless networks, of “5G”, will enable businesses and the community to further develop products and services utilising 5G network capabilities, including autonomous vehicles, smart cities and offices, virtual reality and a range of other smart industry products and services.

It’s expected the new 5G technologies will play an important role in advancing new network solutions that offer advancements in speed, cost and security. There will be significant opportunities for both incumbents and new players across the IT industry to innovate, collaborate and create new markets. They will be able to deliver new services for networking, cutting edge computing needs and communications for businesses and the community.

Cloud Native Mobile Network

Microsoft intend to empower the telecommunications industry as it continues to develop its systems into 5G and support network equipment manufacturers and operators in their efforts to find solutions that are faster, easier and more cost effective. With the acquisition of Affirmed Networks, Microsoft have a fully virtualised, cloud native mobile network providing solutions that enable operators to simplify network operations, reduce costs and rapidly create and launch new revenue generating solutions.

The acquisition allows Microsoft to evolve their work with telecommunications businesses by building on a secure and trusted platform for customers to use. Microsoft will be able to offer the IT industry new and innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of operators, including managing their network workloads in the cloud.

Previous Wireless Networks

Previous generations of wireless networks have been based on purpose built hardware. Microsoft believes that with 5G innovation in software and by making use of broadly available cloud computing platforms such as MS Azure, operators can deploy and maintain 5G networks and services more efficiently, more cost effectively, more rapidly and more securely.

Extending The Cloud

Microsoft is very optimistic about the future with the acquisition of Affirmed Networks with its leadership in virtualised mobile networks. Utilising this technology and their team of experts, Microsoft intends to extend their cloud offerings to operators everywhere including Adelaide, South Australia as the increasingly look to run their networks in a hybrid environment. Microsoft believe it will be able to improve overall profitability of operators and create new revenue streams online.

As Microsoft extends its cloud based technologies with 5G connectivity, they still understand the importance of deep and strong partnerships to ensure the success of its customers. They intend to work closely with existing suppliers, emerging innovators
